Bulge Radius and What Happens on Toe/Heel Strikes

The curve running side to side across your driver face isn't cosmetic. It's a deliberate correction for one of the most common mis-hits in golf.

Look at a driver face straight on and it looks flat. Run a straightedge across it and it isn't — the face curves outward slightly from center toward both the heel and the toe. That curve is called bulge, and it's measured as a radius, typically somewhere between about 8 and 14 inches depending on the manufacturer and model.

Why the Face Curves at All

When you strike the ball toward the toe, the clubhead doesn't stay perfectly square through impact. Because the shaft attaches near the heel, a toe strike causes the head to rotate open slightly as it contacts the ball — a reaction called gear effect, the same principle that makes a rack of gears spin in opposite directions when they mesh. That opening rotation imparts left-to-right sidespin on the ball for a right-handed golfer, which would normally send a toe miss curving further right, compounding the problem.

A heel strike does the opposite: the head closes slightly, imparting sidespin that curves the ball left, again compounding the direction of the original miss.

How Bulge Corrects For It

Bulge curvature angles the face open at the toe and closed at the heel relative to the center. That means a toe strike, even though it launches the ball slightly rightward off a face that's aimed a bit left, gets partially offset — the initial launch direction and the gear-effect sidespin work against each other instead of stacking. Done well, the ball still finishes reasonably close to the target line despite the mis-hit. Done poorly, or with a bulge radius that doesn't match how far off-center you typically miss, the correction either overshoots or undershoots.

Bulge doesn't eliminate the penalty for missing the center of the face. It changes how forgiving that penalty is, and how much of it shows up as sidespin versus a simple loss of ball speed.

Why Radius Choice Actually Matters

A tighter bulge radius (a smaller number, meaning more aggressive curvature) corrects harder for a given amount of off-center distance, which can overcorrect for a player with a small, tight miss pattern and understeer their center strikes slightly offline. A more generous radius corrects more gently, which can undercorrect for a player whose misses run wider. Manufacturers pick a single radius per model aimed at their target player profile — there isn't a universal right answer.

We measure bulge radius directly off demo heads using a radius gauge rather than trusting spec sheets alone, since published tolerances can vary more than players expect. During a driver camber fitting, we compare how two or three radius options handle your specific mapped miss pattern side by side, watching dispersion rather than guessing from the number alone.

If your driver misses consistently curve further offline the further they land from center, bulge radius is worth a direct look — not as a replacement for swing work, but as a genuine equipment variable that can widen or narrow your playable miss.
