Shaft Guide
Shaft specs get thrown around a lot without much explanation. Here's what each number actually controls, in plain language, and how shaft choice interacts with the face curvature work we do on drivers and fairway woods.
Flex
Flex describes how much a shaft bends under load during your swing. Letter labels (R, S, X, and so on) are a rough guide at best — two shafts both labeled "Stiff" from different manufacturers can bend noticeably differently. We measure actual deflection on a flex board rather than trusting the label alone.
Weight
Total shaft weight affects swing weight and how the club feels through transition. Lighter shafts generally help players add clubhead speed, but only up to the point where control starts to suffer — that threshold is different for every swing.
Torque
Torque measures resistance to twisting around the shaft's own axis. Lower torque shafts resist twisting more, which can matter for players with a fast, aggressive transition. It's a separate number from flex and the two don't always move together.
Kick Point
Kick point (or bend point) is where a shaft flexes most through the swing — closer to the tip, middle, or butt. A lower kick point tends to help launch the ball higher; a higher kick point tends to keep flight lower and more penetrating.
How Shaft Choice Interacts With Camber Matching
Shaft flex and kick point influence where on the face you tend to strike the ball, especially under fatigue late in a round. A shaft that's slightly too stiff for your tempo can push strikes toward the heel; one that's too soft can do the opposite for some swings. That's part of why we run shaft fitting and camber comparison in the same session — changing one can shift the miss pattern the other is being matched to.
