Face Curvature Across Current Driver Models
We've been logging bulge and roll radii off demo heads on our own bench for years. The spread between models is wider than most golfers expect.
Published spec sheets rarely list bulge and roll radius, which means most players never see the number at all — they just experience the effect of it without knowing there's a spec behind it. We've measured curvature directly off demo heads using a radius gauge as part of our ongoing bench log, and the variation between current models is real enough to matter in a fitting.
Why the Numbers Differ Model to Model
Curvature philosophy tends to split roughly into two camps. Some heads are built with a tighter, more aggressive bulge radius aimed at low-spin players who rarely miss center by much — the curvature corrects hard for a small miss. Others run a more generous radius aimed at forgiveness across a wider strike zone, trading a bit of correction sharpness for a curve that still helps on a bigger miss.
Neither philosophy is universally better. A tight-radius head can actually overcorrect for a player with a wide miss pattern, nudging center strikes slightly offline in the process. A generous-radius head can undercorrect for a player whose misses are small and consistent.
Roll Radius Doesn't Always Track With Bulge
It's tempting to assume a head with an aggressive bulge radius also runs an aggressive roll radius, but that's not consistently true. Vertical and horizontal strike distributions differ enough across the golfing population that manufacturers frequently set the two curvatures independently, based on separate internal testing.
Assuming bulge and roll move together on a given head is one of the more common misconceptions we run into during a camber-matching session.
Why This Matters for a Fitting
Because curvature isn't published, the only reliable way to compare it is direct measurement or hands-on testing against a mapped strike pattern — you can't shop for the right camber off a spec sheet the way you might shop for shaft weight or loft options. That's the core reason camber matching has to happen in person, on a demo wall wide enough to include real variation.
What We Track on the Bench
Our internal log includes bulge radius, roll radius, and face progression (how far forward or back the face sits relative to the hosel) for every current driver model we stock, updated as new releases come through each season. It's a working reference, not a published database, but it's what drives which heads we pull for a given player's camber comparison.
The Takeaway
If curvature were standardized across manufacturers, camber matching wouldn't be worth a dedicated session. It isn't standardized, and the spread is wide enough that the head you demo first isn't necessarily the curvature that fits your miss.
